The Purpose and Practice of Fasting

Pastor David gave us a great talk about the spiritual discipline of fasting today. Fasting, Pastor David explained, isn't as much about changing God's mind but more about changing us and aligning our will with God's. He emphasized that fasting has been a part of spiritual practice since the time of Israel and continues to be meaningful for believers today as they anticipate the return of Christ. Pastor David humorously unpacked different types of fasts, such as normal, partial, absolute, and even supernatural, referring to various biblical passages. From abstaining from food to restraining other habits like television or social media, fasting helps create space for God's work in us. Importantly, fasting should be entered into with prayer and understanding, ensuring our hearts align with God. As Pastor David put it, fasting is about tuning our spiritual awareness to God's continual work around us. This powerful practice can open our hearts, sharpen our spiritual focus, and deepen our relationship with God.
